Letter: Ice hockey club supports Bruce Fortine for COC board

On behalf of the Ice Hockey Club, we’d like to take this opportunity to endorse Bruce Fortine for re-election on Nov. 8.
Fortine has always been there, rooting us on from the first puck drop to now, win or lose — but for reasons you may not know.

Our club was formed as an enticement to move high school athletes to college, individuals who otherwise would not have even thought they could ever be a college student. The club was not started, as strange as it may seem, to bring ice hockey to a California community college — it was created and remains a very focused vehicle to turn athletes into student-athletes.

Competitively, we’ve had both good and not-so-good years; educationally, we’ve always had stellar years. And it’s due solely to the support of current board members such as Fortine that we’ve been able to offer high school hockey players a chance to concurrently pursue their education and hockey, and then move them on to four-year colleges and a degree (or two).

Finding and supporting ways to make education more accessible has always been Fortine’s top priority.

Fortine has promoted and supported our club at all turns, has applauded the success of our student transfer rates no matter the on-ice results, and has, with great pride, boasted to one and all about last year’s team GPA (2.92) more than our National Championship.

Bruce has always focused his efforts on the student. No matter what, Bruce prioritizes student success as No. 1.
