Letter: Scott Wilk deserves credit

I take exception with Rose Gates’ Nov. 3 letter attacking College of the Canyons Board Member Scott Wilk.

Her letter was factually incorrect. I would like to set the record straight.

First, the College of the Canyons budget is determined by Sacramento. Over the last three fiscal years, the college’s funding has been reduced by over $10 million. Despite the decrease in funding, the college will be offering more classes this year than last academic year. That requires excellent management to squeeze the most out of every dollar received from the state.

Second, the board has set up a priority registration system so students can get their classes to graduate on time.  Those students with an academic plan and flexible scheduling are graduating. In fact, COC has the highest transfer rate of any community college in Los Angeles County.

Finally, college’s decisions are made by the five-member board. That requires at least three votes. Wilk has been endorsed by fellow board members Michele Jenkins, Joan MacGregor and Mike Berger. That tells me he is respected by his peers.

College of the Canyons is one of the finest community colleges in the country. Wilk, along with the rest of the board, deserves credit for managing the 23,000 student college in these uncertain economic times.
