As a citizen of the Santa Clarita Valley and the vice president of business services for College of the Canyons, I have had the opportunity to observe the positive contributions made by Bruce Fortine as a long-time board member of the college.

A board member since 1967, Fortine has provided fiscal oversight through his review and approval of instructional programs, contracts, monthly expenditures, capital construction projects, facility renovation, etc.

Bruce understands the importance of education and has dedicated his life to identifying opportunities for partnerships with local businesses, organizations and individuals that lead to vital vocational training in areas such as nursing, welding and sustainable technologies like wind and solar.

Fortine played a key role as a board member who supported the passage of two local bonds: Measure C for $80 million in 2001 and Measure M for $160 million in 2006. These bonds have allowed the college to add new and beautiful facilities, including the University Center, where students can earn bachelor’s degrees without leaving the valley.

These facilities provided the capacity to serve more students, which resulted in additional growth revenue that funded more faculty and staff to provide even more classes to a growing community, a cycle of growth, not decline.

Fortine is an astute business person with many years of experience and connections throughout the business community.

Based on his history and experience with the college and the community, I know that Fortine will continue to serve tirelessly in the future, dedicated to the continued success of the college and its students.

I encourage you to vote Nov. 8 for Fortine as a member of the Board of Trustees for College of the Canyons.
