Homicide detectives today are looking for a young black man suspected of shooting two men in Canyon County on Monday that left one person dead and another wounded.

At the same time, other officers assigned to the Homicide Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department are scouring the area of Soledad Canyon Road and Sierra Highway looking for the gun used in the shooting, a spokesman for the bureau said.

"We have identified the shooter," Lt. Eddie Hernandez told The Signal today. "He is a juvenile, male, black, age 17."

Homicide detectives are preparing to publish photographs of the suspect with the intention of eliciting the help of the media.
"Investigators are going back to the area for another search for the gun," Hernandez said. "We don't know where it was discarded."

Meanwhile, two young men, both 17, are being detained in connection with the shooting at a juvenile hall in Sylmar.
Two others - an adult and a juvenile - who were also taken in for questioning were released after being interviewed, Hernandez said.

At about 3 p.m. Monday, two men were shot in the parking lot of the Canyon Country post office on the 18300 block of Soledad Canyon Road near Sierra Highway.

He was reportedly shot and killed Monday after coming to the aid of another man who was allegedly being robbed. The robbery victim was shot and transporated to a local hospital and is expected to recover.

Today, friends of the victim - known to them only as Alex - say he was kind spiritual man, always in the company of his son.

Two days prior to the shooting, he and his son sat down with the friends at a nearby discount store, reading from the Bible, friends told The Signal.

Investigators interviewed the 6-year-old boy who was with his father when he was shot, Hernandez said.

"We haven't been able to determine if he saw the shooting or heard the shot and ran to where his father was," Hernandez said.

The identity of the two victims have not been released, however, friends of the deceased victim said today he was a married Canyon Country man and father of a 6-year-old boy.
