Studio Essentials artists Sally Van Swearingen, left, and Caitlin Martini, right, create a Bride of Frankenstein Halloween look with model Mandy Larochelle. Van Swearingen and Martini produced an instructional makeup-technique video.

Artists from Studio Essentials of Santa Clarita were busy producing an instructional makeup-technique video Monday, showing Halloween enthusiasts how they can do their makeup on a budget for the annual event.

Sally Van Swearingen, co-owner of A List Hair and Makeup Studio in Newhall, and Caitlin Martini, a special effects makeup artist for the studios, worked on live models for the video.

Using only four colors, and fake eyelashes, the artists styled hair and created an entire look like for the Bride of Frankenstein on a model. Another model was made up to look Tippi Hedren in Alfred Hitchcock’s movie “The Birds” after Hedren’s face was bloodied after being pecked and clawed by birds.

Studio Essentials used fake blood and simple makeup to create the effects.

Van Swearingen was one of the first to build a business specializing in the wedding market before the bridal business became so fashionable.

Opening her first shop in the ’80s, Van Swearingen was nominated by Inc. Magazine for the Small Business Entrepreneur of the Year award in 1990. And the savvy businesswoman was featured in the 2000 edition of “Small Business for Dummies” for her business and marketing strategies.

Van Swearingen also has worked on commercials and promotional videos for companies such as Princess Cruises and Guess.  Martini just completed the film “Cherry” with James Franco and Heather Graham.

“The transformation was fun for the models and the artists,” said Van Swearingen.
