EdRover, the smartphone-based application that raises money for schools, has added more than 50 check-in locations throughout the Santa Clarita Valley.

Developed by local resident Tania Mulry in late 2010, the smartphone application allows shoppers to check into any sponsoring business and direct a donation to the school of their choice.

The edRover application is free for iPhones and Windows-based phones. The application allows parents and any school supporter to accrue funds for the school of their choice.

Participating businesses have an opportunity for brand marketing by alerting parents and shoppers that they are near the store, restaurant or local business. The business makes lump-sum donations to edRover, a nonprofit organization, which, in turn, distributes the donations to schools.

To date, edRover has secured national retailers as supporting businesses, including GameStop, JCPenney, PetSmart, Camping World, Office Depot, Westfield Valencia Town Center and Barnes & Noble.

It has also picked up 15 new area businesses including Classic Design Jewelry, Galpin Motors, Nissan of Valencia, The Chip, Persia Restaurant and more. Also coming on board to support local schools is the College of the Canyons Cougar Stadium and several realty offices.

EdRover also provides school supporters with opportunities to shop online at more than 130 top retailers to earn funds.
