Parents, teachers and students gathered Sept. 30 for a pep rally and kickoff assembly for Oak Hills Elementary School’s fourth annual jog-a-thon.

“This year, we chose a Hollywood theme, and we’re calling it the Jog-Of-Fame,” Parent-Teacher Association President Christine Price said. “We chose Hollywood because we thought it would be fun for the kids, and because Hollywood is made up of a diverse group of people.

“You’ve got creative types, like writers, actors, dressers, makeup and style people, as well as the technical people, like cameramen, animators, lighting, audio and logistics. In order for them to create a finished product, they have to work together as a team. And, that’s what we do here. We work together as a team.”

Committee members for the benefit and the PTA executive board were on hand to encourage the students to participate in this once-a-year fundraising event which promotes exercise and nutrition. The “Jog-of-Fame will be held on Oct. 28 on campus, where all students, teachers and PTA will wear Jog-Of Fame T-shirts with sponsors names and logos listed.

The PTA’s goal for this year is $45,000 which would help fund all the programs lined up for the year, including assemblies, art programs like “Meet the Masters” dances, science fair, variety show, family fun night and books for the classroom.

“Having a Jog-of-Fame, which promotes music, physical education, creativity and nutrition, shows Oak Hills commitment to programs which are being cut all over the country,” Principal Luis Gamarra said. “Praising every child for their individual contribution, as well as promoting team work, through class competitions gives us a unique chance to all work together for a common goal.”

The jog-a-thon committee has set up a program that will help motivate the students to raise as much money for the school as possible in order to eliminate the need for more fundraising throughout the year.

Past awards and incentives for participating in the jog-a-thon have included a music concert for the students, classroom raffles, lunch with the teachers, an autographed guitar, Playstation 3 pack, iPod, CDs and gift certificates.
