Debris is seen strewn across the westbound lanes of Highway 126 west of Commerce Center Drive in Castaic as firefighters work the scene of a crash on Monday.

An adult male was killed Monday and another was in critical condition after a multi-vehicle pileup on Highway 126 near Commerce Center Drive.

The collision happened minutes after 2 p.m. Monday and involved a big-rig truck, a passenger car and a trash truck, officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

The collision on westbound Highway 126 near Commerce Center Drive backed up traffic as California Highway Patrol officers diverted westbound traffic onto eastbound lanes for several hours.

Coroner’s investigators were delayed due to the traffic jam.

CHP reports Monday indicated the collision happened when a truck’s tire blew out and hit a vehicle.

One person was trapped inside a vehicle until firefighters freed him, Inspector Matt Levesque said.

Another person was transported via helicopter to a local trauma center and was in critical condition Monday, Levesque said.

A fire in the trash truck was doused by firefighters, he said.
