Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Pulskamp discusses the importance of a local newspaper in the community with a group of senior residents at Fountain Glen at Valencia on Thursday.

Santa Clarita City Manager Ken Pulskamp spoke to seniors at the Fountain Glen community in Valencia on Thursday as part of The Signal’s ongoing community outreach program.

According to Signal interim publisher Morris Thomas, the presentation was offered as a way to impart the significance of local journalism.

“We thought it was important that a representative of the city indicate to our seniors, who are newspaper readers and a significant part of the voting population, how important it is to stay abreast on local issues,” Thomas said. “Ken was outstanding.”

Among the topics Pulskamp covered were the burgeoning teen heroin problem in the Santa Clarita Valley and Cemex, the controversial proposed mining operation in Canyon Country.

“For democracy to work, it’s imperative that the public be informed and the best way to be informed on local issues is to read the local paper, which acts as a watchdog in everyone’s best interest,” Pulskamp said. “The city of Bell had no watchdog and look at the problems it ran into. If the local paper had covered what was going on, it almost certainly wouldn’t have had those kinds of problems.”
