Hart makes run at finals

Hart makes it finals


The Indians finished first in their pool, advancing to the finals against Chatsworth at the Sylmar Tournament.

A hard-fought match saw Hart fall just short by the score of 24-26.

Casey David led the team with 24 kills, eight aces and 48 assists for the tournament.

Jennie Long finished with 22 kills while Jen Drake tallied 13 blocks, six in the final match where she had to match up against Chatsworth's 6-4 middle hitter. Katie Larimore recorded 10 aces. 

David and Kailey Giordano received all-tournament player awards. Giordano racked up 103 digs during the tournament, filling in at libero for the injured Allison Toledo, out with a knee sprain.

It was the first time Giordano had played the position.

Hart hopes Toledo will be ready for their matchup against West Ranch on Thursday. She will likely be out Tuesday when the Indians play Golden Valley.

Lee, Thio and Zammit champions in JV Fall Brawl


The Junior Varsity Fall Brawl Tennis Tournament was played Saturday at Valencia High.

Nicolle Lee of Valencia High beat Katherine Park of West Ranch 8-5 in the final match to win the singles championship. Nicolle beat teammate and No. 1 seed Shenelle Trujillo of Valencia High in the semifinals 9-8 (7-2).

Park beat Viking Lindsey Weberbauer 8-4 in the other semifinal match. Shenelle Trujillo beat Lindsey Weberbauer 8-1 to take third place. Canyon's Gintare Kerezyte was the consolation winner for the singles.

In doubles, No. 1 seed Carolyn Thio and Nicole Zammit of Valencia won the doubles championship over the No. 3 seed and teammates Arianna Michaels and Rhiannon MacKay of Valencia High 2-1 after Rhiannon injured her wrist and had to retire.

Thio and Zammit beat Amanda Keller and Ashley Frederick of Saugus 8-3 in one semifinal match.

In the other semifinal match, Arianna and Rhiannon beat teammates Lauren Walden and Tarryn Joubert, 8-3. Amanda and Ashley of Saugus beat Lauren and Joubert of Valencia to take third.

Quartz Hill's Aparna Chanrashekar and Nupar Maakar were the consolation winners for the doubles.

SCC 3, Hillcrest Christian 0 (Friday)

Santa Clarita Christian beat Hillcrest Christian at Granada Hills, 25-23, 25-17, 26-24.

The girls improved to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in league.

Kaley Morison led the team with 12 kills, while Kristina Gibson had five kills and Karla Eberline had a total of four. Morrison continued with three aces and eight digs, Gibson came up with one ace and 11 digs.

Eberlein had eight digs, five blocks and one ace. Joanna Masopust contributed with 22 assists.

Santa Clarita Christian will play Tuesday at Faith Baptist at 4:30 p.m.

College Women's Volleyball
COC 3, Bakersfield 1 (Friday)

College of the Canyons' volleyball came back to defeat Bakersfield on the road, 24-26, 25-17, 25-19, 25-13.

Caitlyn Ramirez led the team with 16 kills and 14 digs. Heather Seddon also had nine kills and nine blocks. Brooklyn Arndt pitched in with 17 digs. Danielle Evan and Ashley Arnold tag-teamed for 20 assists each.

The ladies improved to 13-6 overall and 5-0 in conference.

The Cougars will now face the No. 1 ranked team in the state Pierce College at COC at 7 p.m. this coming Tuesday.
