Marsha McLean: Walk with City Council on Nov. 6

History tells us that President Harry S. Truman loved walking. In fact, according to walking.org, he claimed that walking a brisk two miles each day before breakfast was a key contributor to his long life.

I think Truman’s prescription for good health is one we should take whenever possible. Walking is simple, effective and doesn’t require membership or much training. 

Helping our residents enjoy a high quality of life in Santa Clarita, in part, means providing ample opportunities to get outside and stay fit.

That’s why the Santa Clarita City Council created the healthy Santa Clarita program, which supports new parks, trails, recreational activities and events to get residents moving.

I’m pleased to share that Nov. 6, one of Santa Clarita’s biggest health-inspired events will take place — the 16th annual Santa Clarita Marathon. 

Now, I know what you are thinking, “I’m all about fitness, Mayor McLean, but I’m not prepared to run 13.1 or 26.2 miles.”

And trust me, I understand your sentiments. But the annual Santa Clarita Marathon offers more than a long-distance physical challenge.

There’s the 5K run for those who want a challenge, and the Kid K, for children 12 and younger.  For those of you who enjoy a brisk, 3-mile walk, I invite you to participate in the Mayor’s Walk — an event I think Truman would support and enjoy. 

Registration is under way for all of the events, and if you’ve been looking for a less-intense opportunity to participate in the marathon, then I hope you will register today and make plans to join me for the Mayor’s Walk. 

If it’s been awhile since you’ve walked three miles, don’t worry.  Walking as exercise is like riding a bike; it might feel a little awkward at first, but once you get in motion,  it will feel natural and boost your energy.

And the best part about the Mayor’s Walk is that I’ll be there with members of the Santa Clarita City Council to cheer you on and congratulate you when you cross the finish line.

Last year, dozens of families, church groups, youth clubs, troops and other community organizations joined the mayor and City Council for this fitness-inspired walk, and I have no doubt that this year’s event will be another great experience.

The Mayor’s Walk course follows nearly the same route as the 5K run along paseos and trails, and ends at the official marathon finish line at the Westfield Valencia Town Center.  

The Mayor’s Walk begins 15 minutes after the start of the marathon, half-marathon and 5K run, at Mall Entrance and McBean Parkway (adjacent to the official marathon start line), allowing participants to enjoy the marathon’s opening ceremony festivities.

The course concludes at the official marathon finish line at Westfield Valencia Town Center.  Participants also may access the Whole Foods Recovery Zone, where they will receive a Clif Bar, bananas, oranges, bagels, electrolyte-recovery drinks, water and Gatorade. 

The goal of the Recovery Zone is to provide nutritional items that meet the unique needs of event participants, so they receive quality nutrition to replenish after exercise. 

Best of all, every Mayor’s Walk participant receives a finisher’s medal and commemorative T-shirt, so you can celebrate the day and stay inspired all year long.
