The Saugus Union School District started out with one wooden schoolhouse in 1908 and over the past century has grown to 15 schools spread out across Saugus, Canyon Country and Valencia.

The district will hold a Centennial Celebration from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Bridgeport Park in Valencia for current and former students, teachers and administrators.

"We'll have a lot of pictures that we've put in a scrapbook - just lots of things from our district's history," said Saugus School Board President Judy Umeck. "We've also received letters from people across the United States who were former students and wanted to share their experiences."

Esther Dyer, 76, attended Saugus School, which replaced the old Saugus Schoolhouse in 1936.

"I had a great childhood and that school was a big part of it," Dyer said. "I made a lot of good friends there, and many of them are still my friends today."

Saugus School had four rooms with two grades in each room. There were two-station desks for the lower grades and individual desks for the upper grades, Dyer said.

"We played intramural sports against other schools and we would sometimes play sports at recess," Dyer said. "I was always good at sports."

Dyer will attend Sunday's celebration.

"I'm looking forward to seeing anyone I might know," Dyer said.

The celebration will have 22 booths, performances by Saugus students, activities for kids and foods and beverages from local venders. There will be one booth representing each of the current 15 schools, a booth for schools that have closed, a booth for former students and teachers to reconnect and more, according to Umeck.

"People will come away feeling more connected to their school community," Umeck said. "With all of the challenges facing schools today, this celebration gives us an opportunity to showcase our successes."
