City increases street sweeping frequency
The city of Santa Clarita is street sweeping on a weekly basis, up from every other week. This will continue until Jan. 2009. Residents are asked to remove vehicles form the street and to keep the streets clear of garden trimmings, trash, debris, and portable basketball courts. Call (661) 286-4098.

Filipino-American Association anniversary
The Filipino-American Association of Santa Clarita Valley will celebrate its Silver Anniversary at the Valencia Hyatt at 6 p.m. today. Assemblyman Cameron Smyth and Santa Clarita city Councilwoman Laurene Weste are scheduled to attend, as well as other local dignitaries.

Interstate 5 closures at Hasley Canyon Road
Portions of Interstate 5 at Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic will be closed Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday to make way for work on the new Hasley Canyon Bridge. Northbound Interstate 5 is planned to be fully closed from midnight to 5 a.m. Tuesday. The detour for northbound I-5 traffic will exit at Highway 126 west, south on Commerce Center Drive, east on Henry Mayo Drive, north on The Old Road to the northbound Interstate 5 on-ramp at Lake Hughes Road. The southbound Interstate 5 freeway is scheduled for full closure from midnight to 5 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday. The detour for the southbound I-5 traffic will exit at Hasley Canyon southbound off-ramp, south on The Old Road to the southbound I-5 on-ramp just north of Rye Canyon Road.

City plants oak trees
The city of Santa Clarita celebrates Make a Difference Day and Oaktoberfest during an oak tree planting from 9 a.m. to about 1 p.m. today at Todd Longshore Park in Canyon Country. Officials and volunteers are set to plant 40 new oak trees through the park. The park is located at 28151 Whites Canyon Road.

Book of the Year activities

Diavolo to perform at COC
