Local sex offender banned from multiple locations

State officials have barred a registered sex offender from the area around a victim’s home and six other Santa Clarita Valley locations, including several houses of worship.

The move follows complaints from the victim’s mother that the offender, who is on parole, was seen near her home.

Canyon Country resident Caroline Mason complained earlier this month that William Greggory Babb, 50 — who last year pleaded guilty in San Fernando Superior Court to one felony of contacting a minor with the intention of engaging in lewd or lascivious behavior — was seen on the same block where she and her son live.

Babb was imprisoned in June 2010 and released Sept. 3 from the California Institution for Men in Chino.

Mason also complained that she wasn’t notified that Babb would be released, but state officials said she didn’t fill out the correct paperwork to receive such notification.

Babb, who is living in Canyon Country, has been barred from the area around Mason’s residence, Golden Valley High School, the Santa Clarita Soccer Training Center and from four houses of worship, including one through which Babb contacted Mason’s son.

“Babb is on a GPS monitor,” said Luis Patino, spokesman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

“Therefore, should such an infraction occur, it will be documented and action taken,” he said.

“Similarly ... the parole agent who is in charge of this case had already placed a restriction from Babb going near (North Oaks Church of Christ), where the original offense of indecent exposure occurred,” Patino said.

A Special Victims Unit detective said at the time of Babb’s arrest that he used churches to befriend boys in their teens.

Other locations off limits to Babb are the Congregation Beth Shalom, Heart of the Canyons Church and the Santa Clarita Islamic Center.

Babb declined to speak to The Signal when contacted for comment last week.
