Single Mothers Outreach seeks participants
Single Mothers Outreach is looking for local groups and families interested in adopting single parent families for the holiday season as part of its annual Adopt-a-Family Holiday Program. Families selected to be adopted are student-parents carrying at least six units in school, parents who are actively participating in Single Mothers Outreach like skills-oriented growth programs or new clients in 2008. Almost 130 families qualify. Families and organizations interested in helping can call (661) 288-0117. When leaving a message, include the contact name, phone and the maximum family size for adoption.

City receives funding for improvements
The city of Santa Clarita received a grant worth $637,270 from the federal Safe Routes to School program to make physical improvements in and around Peachland, Mitchell and Rosedell elementary schools. The project is designed to reduce vehicle speed around the local schools and increase the visibility of school crossings, speed feedback signs, enhanced crosswalks, pedestrian countdown signals and upgraded school area signage. The overall goal of the federal program is to enable and encourage children to walk and bike to school. It marks the third year the city won the grant money.

Halloween Fiesta Friday
The city and Sunrise Rotary Club will host the annual Halloween Fiesta from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Santa Clarita Community Center. The event features a costume contest, haunted house, pumpkin decorating and magic show for families. The Community Center is located at 22421 Market St.

Canyon Country park reopens
Santa Clarita completed the Playground Upgrades Project at Canyon Country Park. The project included the replacement of play equipment and a resurfacing of the ground areas so that the park is in compliance with the standards of the American Disabilities Act. Canyon Country Park is located at 17615 Soledad Canyon Road.
