Letter: Sept. 11 is a day to mourn, celebrate life

I think all of us can remember where we were when the news of 9/11 broke.

The feelings of shock, horror, disbelief, fear and grief were palpable. We clung to the news feeds as a lifeline, looking for glimpses of hope.

Perhaps a rescue or an escape would salvage this terror. Instead, the minutes ticked on, unfolding anguish upon anguish.

I can still feel it, as strong as the labor pains I was panting through. Sometimes someone will pity that I was giving birth on that dreadful day. I quickly put an end to it, stating that, aside from the determination and focus that comes upon a woman while giving birth, what carried me through was the thought that there is still hope in new life.

And there was. His name is Joel Moise Fortier, born at Henry Mayo Hospital on Sept. 11, 2001.

Happy birthday, my son, my dream come true. While we honor the memory of those lost that day, we also celebrate the hope of life. We celebrate your birthday.
