Judging from the traffic on Friday afternoon, it’s hard to imagine that anyone is left in the Santa Clarita Valley this weekend. I hope everyone has a safe long weekend. Next up, Thanksgiving.

Kudos to Merry Graham, Signal Food writer
Word arrived this week in The Signal newsroom that The Signal’s own food writer, Merry Graham, of Newhall, was the big winner of the first Spar for the Spurtle, sponsored by Bob’s Red Mill. She was among three finalists from nearly 50 entrants challenged to make the best oatmeal recipe.
Graham won with her recipe for black bean porridge patties. She competed in a live cook-off in Portland, Ore. on Aug. 26. She won a trip to represent Bob’s Red Mill at the 18th annual Golden Spurtle World Porridge Making Championships in Scotland.

Free RockStar Internet marketing seminar
Craig Duswalt, founder of the RockStar System for Success will host a free Internet marketing seminar from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday at The Paseo Club in Valencia. The seminar will cover how to make a website for free to promote yourself or your business; how to set up a free blog to attract a community of like-minded people that will purchase your products and services and how to attract hits on your website, among many other topics. Seating is limited. To sign up visit www.craigduswalt.com/freeseminar.

Emotional, magical Heart of the West benefits children
Kudos to all who donated  time, money and items to benefit the children of Carousel Therapeutic Riding Ranch and the 15th annual Heart of the West fundraiser. Children and horses still need sponsorships. No amount is too small. Visit www.carouselranch.org or call (661) 268-8010 for more information. It was great to see auctioneer Mark Drilling in action again; he certainly knows how to work a crowd.

Stepping up, giving back
Among the folks with the biggest hearts are Wayne and Connie Spears of Agua Dulce Airport, who shut down the facility for a week so that Heart of the West could be held at the facility. Also, the Princess Cruises Community Foundation stepped up in a big way to become the presenting sponsor of Heart of the West. In addition, Vincent Hill Station Restaurant and Saloon donated all of the wine, spirits, water and soda. Isn’t it wonderful to have such giving people in the SCV?

Seen at Heart of the West
Among those seen at Heart of the West: Joel Cox, Shelley and G. Marshall Hann, Billie and Don Hubbard, Julie and Steve Sturgeon, Howard Pointer, Jonathan Ratter, Debbie and John Heys, Dianne and Wayne Crawford, Jeanna and Kyle Crawford, Barbara Myler, Ed Bolden, Jamie Kennedy, Betty and Rick Fung, Scott and Vanessa Wilk, Scott Wilk, Jr., Jana Adkins, Barbara Myler, Jason Schaff, Lila Littlejohn, Brad and Lea Lanfranco, Cliff and Julie Chandler, Daniel Sterkel and Christine Sterkel and Julie Benson.

Mike Bjorkman of SCV Leasing has a big heart
Kudos to Mike Bjorkman from SCV Leasing, who thrilled all the children at the recent SCV Water Festival by buying both buckets of rubber duckies so everyone had a chance to win the race. The event benefited Single Mothers Outreach. For more information about this important SCV grassroots nonprofit visit www.singlemothersoutreach.org.
