Sheriff's deputies arrested one person for driving under the influence at a sobriety checkpoint in Valencia that kicked off the Labor Day driving weekend.

The checkpoint, which was at Newhall Ranch Road and Grandview Drive Thursday night through Friday morning, stopped and screened 692 cars, said Barbara Mutaw, traffic secretary for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.

Along with the one arrest for driving under the influence, deputies cited one person for possession of marijuana and performed five field sobriety tests, Mutaw said.

Deputies also issued 14 citations for driving without a license, driving with a suspended license or driving without proof of insurance, Mutaw said.

Four vehicles were towed, and two of them were impounded for 30 days because the driver did not have a license, Mutaw said.
