Letter: Newhall Ranch will be a benefit to the valley

Regarding “Locals need to speak up about Newhall Ranch,” Aug. 25:

The Newhall Ranch Project is a project of Newhall Land Development Inc. It was approved in 2004, after years of due diligence, many revisions, and through all the board of supervisors hearings.

The company is still processing the “villages” or tentative tract maps for the different neighborhoods. Years ago, Newhall Land made the community aware that there are different areas of the project for every lifestyle.

Do you know, Richard Myers, that the project is preserving more than two-thirds of the land for public open space, preserving the river corridor and ultimately creating a great place to live (much like Valencia), with schools, parks, trails, and with more than 60,000 jobs?

Myers, I think you do not realize that there is a right way and a wrong way to present your case. I, for one, am willing to listen to an argument if the premise is presented in a civil way.

It’s insulting to say this project will be good for nobody except the sellers. Newhall Land has built many wonderful projects over the years.

I’m sorry if you feel this project will impede your drive to Ventura, but I don’t think this would be the case. What do you now suggest we do about the problem of leaving our valley on Highway 14 and Interstate 405? Most times of the day, any of these routes are a nightmare to traverse.

Shall we demolish all the freeways and go back to the old roads with one lane each direction and a “suicide lane” in the middle? I think not.

As you suggest, I will look for hearing dates on Newhall Ranch.
