It’s time to run away, if only for the day to the beach at Ventura.

The kids are back in school, it's hot and you can't really afford to run far, far away. But you can take a drive down Highway 126 to Ventura Harbor, have lunch, then walk across the street to the beach, where you can feel the sand between your toes and the sea breeze on your face. On your drive home stop off at one, or several, of the fruit and vegetable stands that line the side of the road.

Remember when we were young, carefree and gas was 70 cents a gallon?

Those days are long gone, but we can still find time to play hooky from work, school and responsibility and take a one-day road trip down Highway 126 to Ventura.

The best part is the dropping temperatures as you head west to the ocean.

As soon as you hit Fillmore, only 20 minutes or so from the Santa Clarita Valley, you notice a drop on your car's outdoor temperature gauge.

You can stop in Fillmore and drive down the quaint Main Street and stop at the Fillmore and Western Railway (

Also fun as you make your way down Highway 126, or on your way home, is the number of fruit and vegetable stands that line the roadway.

Everything from melons to oranges to honey is for sale along Highway 126. Stop for a cool drink, and shop for everything from root beer licorice to salsa - and everything in between.

Sage honey with honeycomb?

Real watermelons, WITH seeds?

Sweet or Rainier cherries?

Sweet corn?

Once to arrive in Ventura check out The Greek restaurant at Ventura Harbor.

Ask to be seated at a table with a view of the harbor.

Watch the kayaks and the boats bob along.

Yes, this is the life. If only for a day!

After lunch, walk across the street to the beach. Take off your shoes and stroll along the water's edge, feel the sand squish between your toes. Sigh, again!
