Valencia High School’s three cheer teams — the freshman, junior varsity and varsity levels — all took first place for two awards in the Camp Champ competition recently at UCLA.
“While at camp, our cheerleaders learn both a cheer and extreme dance routine where they incorporate tumbling, jumps and stunts,” said Melisa Gray, the JV and varsity cheer teams’ coach at Valencia.
“They then compete in a competition called Camp Champs, with the new routines on the last day of camp.”
Every girl went home with two trophies for the awards Cheer and Extreme.
“We never know what we will be up against each year,” Gray said of the competition.
The competition also helps the team prepare for the new school.
“(Assistant) Coach Kelly and I are extremely proud of our cheerleaders,” Gray said. “They are talented young athletes.”
