Two people were arrested for driving under the influence following a checkpoint set by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station in Newhall on Friday night, Lt. Joe Efflandt said Saturday.

The DUI checkpoint ran from 6 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday at Lyons Avenue and Wheeler Road in Newhall, he said.

A total of 732 cars were screened at the checkpoint. Along with the two arrests, deputies gave 24 citations to drivers for violations, including driving with expired licenses or vehicle registrations, he said. Ten cars were also towed.

The SCV Sheriff’s Station periodically sets up checkpoints in the Santa Clarita Valley to safely remove drunk drivers from the roads. The checkpoints are set up based on DUI-related activity in the area. Checkpoints are funded by state grants.
