Letter: Paying taxes is a modern-day patriotic duty

There’s a national conflict between corporate America and the working class, which is the quest for lower wages and more profits for shareholders versus a quest for living wages and a more sustainable society.

The conflict has lost us jobs to cheaper foreign labor markets, with huge payroll tax losses for the government.

Congress is responsible for our high unemployment as both Democrat and Republican administrations embraced and passed corporate-sponsored free trade agreements that ultimately led to lost American wages and loss of government tax revenues.

Instead of cutting social benefits to seniors, or laying off teachers and firement, I suggest Congress gain tax revenues from those sources in our society that have gained the most from free trade and hugely profited from the opportunity our country has given them.

It’s not only fair, but it should be their patriotic duty and the right thing to do for our society, which is in a period of economic stress.
