The Hart District Governing Board welcomed Abby Lim, this year’s student board member, to the dais during Thursday’s meeting.

Abby, a sophomore at Early College High School, will serve on the William S. Hart Union High School District board for the 2008-09 school year, representing the student point of view at board meetings through June.

Although the student board member’s vote does not affect the outcome of a board vote, the student member is seated with regular board members, participates in board discussion and is asked to express her opinion on most votes taken in a governing board meeting.

“She was selected from our group of student council members,” said Superintendent Jaime Castellanos, referring to the district’s Student Communications Council, whose members represent student government organizations throughout the Hart district.

The council also elected officers at its initial meeting of the school year Thursday: Connor  Kampff, Saugus High School, president; Justin Barnes, West Ranch High School, vice president; and Karely Tamayo, Golden Valley High School, secretary.

Abby maintains a grade point average of 4.25 and is ranked fifth in her class academically. She is a member of an international dance and singing group called “God’s Image” and teaches Korean at a Korean school in Northridge. She is a member of Visions in Progress, sponsored by the SCV Youth Advisory Committee.

“I play guitar and I like to dance and sing,” Abby told the board.
