It’s back-to-school time in the Santa Clarita Valley. Students from Castaic Union School District are already back in the classroom, Sulphur Springs goes back Aug. 18, Saugus schools begin on Aug. 17, most Newhall schools go back Aug. 17, and Hart District students begin on Aug. 18.
Summer’s over, and it’s back to homework. Watch out for the traditional back-to-school traffic jams, too!

Support local programs
Canyon Country, Golden Valley, William S. Hart, Saugus, Valencia and West Ranch High Schools will be competing at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16  at Margarita’s Mexican Grille (next to the Do It Center), 23320 Valencia Blvd., Valencia. in the 2011 Burrito Bowl Eating Contest to benefit all football varsity, junior varsity and freshman programs. Each school will bring the five biggest eaters to represent their school.
A 4-foot burrito, donated by Margarita’s is placed in front of each team. The team that eats the burrito in the fastest time receives the $1,000 grand prize. Second place is $500 ,and the rest of the schools will share $250 each.

Heart of the West
The 15th annual Heart of the West presented by the Princess Cruises Community Foundation will be held at Agua Dulce Airport from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27.
The fundraiser is the signature annual event for Carousel Therapeutic Riding Ranch which provides therapeutic riding services to children with physical and mental challenges.
Tickets are $85 for general tickets and $175 for VIP. Dinner by Salt Creek Grille, one of the best auctions around and dancing under the stars by SOS Entertainment.

67th annual OLPH Church BBQ
One of the oldest annual events in the SCV is the annual Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church BBQ.
The 67th annual event will be held Sept. 16-18 at the Newhall church. Sponsorships and raffle items are being sought. Funds raised from the event will be used to modernize and enhance the parish.

Bocce Ball Festival
Now for something completely different! To enjoy a day of bocce ball and food trucks travel out to Santa Paula and the Limoneira company noon to 6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 21.
The Gourmet Food Truck and Bocce Ball Festival at Limoneira Ranch offers up gourmet food trucks, music from four local bands and a chance to team up and play a couple rounds of bocce ball with friends and family. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children 5-12. Children 5 and under are free. Buy tickets online at www.boccefestival.com. Tickets will be $20 at the door. From the Santa Clarita Valley travel down the Highway 126 exit Briggs Road, Turn right on Briggs and follow the festival parking signs to Food Truck and Bocce Ball Heaven!
