West Ranch spikes Saugus

Alison Summers' serving made the difference in a 21-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 victory, in a match featuring two of the top three teams Thursday in the Foothill League.

"We didn't play to the best of our ability," West Ranch head coach Nate Sparks said.

Summers won seven points with her serve in the third game to help the Wildcats (4-0 in league, 8-4 overall) pull away. She had a match-high 12 aces to go with a team-high 14 kills.

Sophia Burns put away 10 kills and 19 assists. Megan Futch hit nine kills, Isabelle Howell had seven.

Hart 3, Canyon 1
Breena Beckett put away the fourth game with authority, in a 25-22, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18 Indians win over the Cowboys.

Beckett finished the Foothill League match with six blocks, including two in the last few points to close out the fourth game.

Jennie Long hit eight kills for Hart (2-2 in league, 6-8 overall). Allison Toledo came up with 27 digs and four service aces.

Freshman football
Valencia 49, Canyon 21
Vikings quarterback Ryan Goreman and running back Zach Kelley both starred on the gridiron Thursday, in a Foothill League-opening victory over the Cowboys.

Goreman went 11-for-16 for 195 yards and a touchdown pass to running back Edmond Darko, a 31-yarder in the first quarter. Kelley tacked on four more touchdowns. He scored on a 3-yard burst, a four-yarder, a one-yard dash and a 36-yard interception.

Junior varsity tennis
Valencia 18, Golden Valley 0
Kirstie Kwock, Taylor Erranova, Lindsey Weberbrauer, Shenelle Trujillo and Brittany Meunitz all swept singles with the score of 6-0.

The doubles teams of Nicole Zammit and Carolyn Thio, Michelle Savage and Nichole Lee, Arianna Micheals and Rhiannon Mackay,Lariska Theron and Lindsey Bridges, Lauren Walden and Tarryn Joubert all swept their tennis matches.
