An elderly married couple who were shot and killed Friday by a retired local dentist lived in an upscale Beverly Hills-area retirement hotel, The Signal has learned following the release Sunday of the couple’s identities.

Murder victims Leo Moss, 95, and his wife, Jean, 90, lived in West Hollywood, Lt. Cheryl MacWillie of the Los Angeles County Department of Coroner said Sunday.

MacWillie also identified the third victim in the murder-suicide, whom homicide detectives identified earlier as the shooter, as Martin F. Strassner, 64.

On Friday afternoon, Strassner returned from an assisted-living hotel in Los Angeles with Leo and Jean Moss, pulled in the driveway of his Bridgeport home and shot them both as they sat in the car, then shot himself, according to a homicide detective detailing the double-murder-suicide Friday.

The bodies were found inside the car by Strassner’s wife, Susan, who called the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
The Strassners lived in a two-story house on Bay View Court in Bridgeport.

“Our preliminary investigation suggests one of the persons in the car shot the other two and shot himself,” Lt John Corina of the Los Angeles County sheriff’s Homicide Bureau told reporters the day of the shooting.

The body of Jean Moss was found in the front passenger seat of the car, her husband’s body in the backseat.

Martin Strassner was found dead behind the steering wheel of the car, a handgun believed to be the murder weapon in his lap, Corina said.

A suicide note was also found inside the car, he said.

Corina did not disclose the contents of the note when asked by reporters about a possible motive for the shooting.

Upscale residence
The Moss couple lived in the Beverly Hills Carmel, on Burton Way, in Los Angeles, identified on the building as “Independent & Assisted Retirement Living.”

For more than 30 years, the Beverly Hills Carmel has provided extensive assistance to its seniors including medication management, bathing and dressing or personal hygiene for those who require it, according to its website.

Prior to having moved into the building, Leo and Jean Moss lived for more than 15 years on Clifton Way in Beverly Hills.
Their daughter Susan married Strassner in 1969.

The Strassners moved from Northridge to Bridgeport when the community officially opened in the mid-2000s.

Their home on Bay View Court sits between Bridgeport Elementary School and the eastern end of Bridgeport’s manmade lake.

Up until a couple of years ago, Martin Strassner, a former captain in the Air Force, provided orthodontic services at offices in both Canyon Country, on Camp Plenty Road, and in Granada Hills, on White Oak Avenue.

Neighbors told The Signal this past weekend that Strassner’s widow, Susan, talked about what good financial shape the couple was in.

Within a couple of years of having passed her Certified Public Accountancy exam, Susan Strassner began teaching about public accountancy.

She retired from teaching in 2006, according to her profile posted on her personalized website, and now works as the controller and financial manager for a large group of emergency room physicians in the Los Angeles area.

She is the author of a book called, “How to Pay 0% Interest on Credit Cards.”
