Letter: Martin Luther King Jr. was not a Republican

In response to “Dems have a history of lying about history,” July 29:

When Devon Cormier suggests that a “simple Google search” reveals that Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican, she knows that her search also produced a heavy volume of results that indicate that Dr. King was not a member of the GOP.

But she is assuming that the casual reader won’t bother to check.

Instead of trying to paint the civil rights icon as a member of one party or another, one only needs to look at King’s political allies and adversaries to know, with certainty, what King’s political persuasion was.

It is a historical record that King voted for Democrat John F. Kennedy. He spoke very publicly against Republican candidate Barry Goldwater. He was closely allied with Democrat Lyndon B. Johnson.

Only the naive still try to associate the Dixiecrats of the Old South with today’s Democratic Party.

The Freedom Riders and other civil-rights events that marked the era were organized in large part by young Democrats, although I am sure there were also many young Republicans among their numbers, too.

Cormier is hoping that SCV readers didn’t have very good history teachers.
