It was a hot, stinky ride for motorists around lunchtime today as more than 30 gallons of raw sewage spilled onto Interstate 5 south of Calgrove Boulevard.

At about 12:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the interstate, a United Waste truck reported hauling "some type of fluid" spilled its load, said California Highway Patrol Officer John Lutz.

When emergency crews of the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded, they found the fluid to be raw sewage, he said.

Between 30 and 35 gallons of the sewage spilled onto the freeway.

"Lane four was closed and, when Caltrans responded at 1:22, they closed lane three as well," said Lutz. "The company responded for the cleanup at 1:47 p.m."
