Letter: McKeon’s past doesn’t reflect present actions

This is a response to an email from Congressman Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita. I sent it to him, but I wanted to share it.

I read your email, and the article by Charles Krauthammer. I have a couple of questions.

What Bush-era spending bills did you, or he, oppose? Which of the wars did you vote against at a billion dollars a month? Which did Krauthammer oppose? How many debt-ceiling increases did you vote against during the Bush years?

It seems to me that it is you who is now “born again” as a deficit hawk.

It is clear that the profligate spending on military adventures, coupled with reckless deregulation of Wall Street, led us to where we are today. Yet, you still think that millionaires should pay less taxes than I do. Oil companies are raking in more profits than ever, yet they pay a very small percentage of them in taxes.

Krauthammer is right about one thing, though. Republicans will take the blame when the debt-ceiling talks fail. It will lead to financial calamity, and with any luck, Republicans will be cast out for a generation, just like they were after their policies sparked the Great Depression.
