Letter: Codes make home construction costly

Sometimes the building department does what it is supposed to do, like tearing down structures that are a public nuisance.
There are also times when the building department throws roadblocks at regular people who are just trying to build a regular house.

A few years ago, I had to bulldoze a hill on my property. The grading work took two weeks and cost $12,000. The pile of paper required by the building department took 16 months and cost $16,000.

How many people have been priced out of home ownership because of overregulation like this?
