Nathaniel Pilkinton was released from sheriff's custody Thursday and a felony charge of attempted murder was dropped due to insufficient evidence, said Detective Dan Finn of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.
Pilkinton was arrested Tuesday at a local military recruiting office, and was being held at the Sheriff's Station in lieu of $500,000 bail.
On Jan. 8, three men in a dark-colored Ford Mustang reportedly approached a group of three Hispanic men on Lone Rock Street near Whites Canyon Road and exchanged words with them.
When one of the men in the street walked toward the car, a passenger in the vehicle allegedly fired at least one shot from a small-caliber handgun, striking the 19-year-old victim in the upper torso.
Daniel Gonzalez, 20, of Alpine, and Pablo Blanco, 19, of Canyon Country were arrested last week and are still in custody.
