A man driving on Agua Dulce Canyon Road lost control of his vehicle, after suffering a flat tire, and crashed into a gas pipe Sunday evening in Agua Dulce, causing California Highway Patrol officers to shut down a portion of the road for three hours, according to officials.

At approximately 5:40 p.m., CHP officers received a call that gas was spewing out of the broken pipe, according to Officer Perry Haggard of the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Office.

“(The driver) was driving down the road, got a flat tire, lost control, and went over the edge and hit the main valve,” Haggard said.

As a precaution, CHP officers shut down a 100-yard stretch of Agua Dulce Canyon between Escondido Canyon and Darling roads, according to Haggard, while they waited for officials from a local gas company to arrive.

No evacuations in the area were made, and no threat exists to local residents, Haggard said.

Officers opened the road to traffic at approximately 8:30 p.m., after gas company repairmen were able to stop the leak, Haggard said.

Work was still being done to fix the broken main Sunday night.
