Local sheriff's deputies have added two more catalytic converter thefts to their growing list of car-butcherings for the coveted parts.

In the last week, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station has launched investigations into reports of at least nine such thefts and has received information for at least half a dozen others.

The latest two thefts documented by deputies involved catalytic converters being cut from cars parked overnight in the driveways of private homes in Castaic and Newhall.

That means at least 15 catalytic converters have been stolen in the Santa Clarita Valley in about a week.

Deputies believe the thieves are stealing the smog-reducing devices for the precious metals they contain, such as platinum.
