More details emerged Wednesday surrounding the drowning of a Reseda man at Castaic Lake on Sunday.

Deputies with the Parks Bureau of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said the 28-year-old Reseda man died in failed efforts to retrieve an anchor.

“He was apparently going under the water to do something with the anchor,” said Deputy Johnie Jones. “He kept trying to do that, going down about 17 feet. But then, for some reason, the anchor fell to about 40 feet.

“Whether that had anything to do with this, we don’t know,” he said. “We don’t know if he cramped up. He had gone under a couple of times; then at some point, he did not come up.”

Investigators reported Tuesday they are now waiting for the results of toxicology tests stemming from an autopsy done on the man’s body.

Officials are still trying to contact the man’s next of kin in Mexico before they release his identity.
