City receives state grant
The city of Santa Clarita received a $141,723 grant from the state of California's "Bicycle Transportation Account Grant," allowing the city to improve its non-motorized modes of travel.
The grant money will go toward restriping and installing bicycle lanes and routes on streets in the Industrial Center. Improvements include a class II bike lane on Avenue Stanford from Newhall Ranch Road to Rye Canyon Road, a class II bike lane on Avenue Scott from Avenue Rockefeller to Rye Canyon Road and a class III bike route on Avenue Stanford from Rye Canyon Road to Avenue Scott.
A class II bike lane is a segment on a roadway that has been stripped off as a bike lane while a class III bike route is a part of a roadway that has a wider lane to accommodate bike riders, according to Mark Hunter, traffic division administrative analyst.
The installations are expected in late 2009.
Three projects in Los Angeles County received grants and 19 "Bicycle Transportation Account Grants" were awarded statewide.
This is the first year the city was eligible to receive the grant.
