Green Thumb nursery is celebrating its 41st anniversary today.

A community staple, the family-owned nursery opened in 1970, and has remained in Santa Clarita for more than 40 years at the same location.

With 20 employees, the garden retailer is one of the leading independent nursery businesses nationwide, said Bryan Payne, store manager since 1994.

Green Thumb operates five stores in Ventura, Canoga Park, Lake Forest, San Marcos and Santa Clarita.

“Our business is one of the top 10 independent garden centers, revenuewise, nationwide,” Payne said.

If the big-box chain stores, such as Home Depot and Lowes, are thrown into the mix, Green Thumb is in the top 20, Payne said.

Celebration
In honor of the anniversary, Green Thumb is hosting activities for the entire family and offering a 20 percent discount off all plants, pottery and gift items, said Kirki Coleman, seasonal buyer for Green Thumb and Valencia resident.

The retailer is holding a “Success with Houseplants”  seminar at 10 a.m. And the author of the coloring book, “State Flowers of America,” which is sold at the store, is signing books until 2 p.m.

“The anniversary celebration is a wonderful opportunity for everyone,” said Trae Mundt, author of the coloring book and Newhall resident.

The first 50 people to arrive receive a free 4-inch houseplant, and the nursery is also selling one- and five-gallon plants for $3 and $10 respectively.

For children, Green Thumb is holding a “Name the Fish” contest. The contest is based on photos of the fish the nursery keeps in a pond.

“The celebration runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.,” Coleman said.

Nursery business
The Santa Clarita store is “holding its own,” according to Payne, a Valencia resident.

“What differentiates the nursery from others is that we have 3.5 acres of plants,” Payne said.

The store has a wider selection of plants than most, and only deals with the best vendors, he said.

“We also offer service. We have a knowledgeable staff,” Payne said. “Six of the nursery employees are certified by the California Association of Nurseries and Garden Centers.”

Employees are educated and tested before receiving certification to ensure they’re knowledgeable.

Several members of the store’s staff are also local residents, including Payne and Coleman, making employees familiar with local soil and climate issues confronting home gardeners.

Green Thumb is located at 23734 Newhall Ave., formerly known as San Fernando Road. It is open 7 days per week. For more information, go to www.greenthumb.com or call (661) 259-1072.
