We've been sweltering in the first heat wave of summer and many of you have probably already taken a cool retreat into an ice cream or frozen yogurt store. And while you most likely have your favorite dessert dishes and icy drinks, you can peruse these pages to see what else you might like to try, and where.

Besides, you never know when the heat will get to you and you'll suddenly need an ice cream fix at the nearest shop. So carry this Escape listing with you in your car at all times and you'll be OK until, well, November.

Here are two establishments, in particular:

Dairy Queen
Herman Tan, who owns both of our local Dairy Queens, said that his customers are his neighbors, and that they cover quite an age range. But they all seem to favor the soft serve ice cream that the DQ is famous for.

"Especially in the summer, a lot of families come in," he said. "The people know the brand. They know what they like."

He added that each month has a featured flavor of ice cream, and in July it is Triple Chocoholic. And don't forget to try a Lemonade Chiller to quench your thirst.

Farrell's Ice Cream Parlour at Mountasia
"People come to Farrell's for the celebrations," said Courtney Bourdas Henn, executive director of Mountasia Family Fun Center (where Farrell's is located).

"We've had 90th birthday parties, team parties, anniversaries, graduation parties, office parties and retirement parties. You have to remember you are not just coming here for ice cream. You are also coming for the ruckus, the Farrell's flair, that we will create for your celebration."

She explained that this celebration is what makes Farrell's unique. "But be prepared. If you bring your kids, you'll likely spend an extra hour or two enjoying the attractions at Mountasia Family Fun Center," she added.

One of the big attractions at Farrell's is the Pig's Trough. This massive concoction includes two bananas and six scoops of ice cream, plus chocolate, pineapple and strawberry toppings, with whipped cream, nuts and cherries.
