UPDATED: Local nurses honored

Two local nurses received an Award of Excellence from Valley Presbyterian Hospital, it was announced today.

Two of 10 nurses honored, both were recognized for their work with newborn patients in the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit.

Fermina Chavez of the Santa Clarita Valley received an award for going "above and beyond the call of duty on a regular basis" in her duties with newborn patients.

Chavez was nicknamed "Saint Fermina" for her dedication, outstanding care, compassion and pleasant demeanor.

Sangeeta Rai of Castaic was recognized for providing breast-feeding support for mothers at Valley Presbyterian and serving as the lead coordinator and instructor for the hospital's "Birth and Beyond" classes.
