In the final tune-up before Foothill League action next week, West Ranch quarterback Jake Bernards threw a pair of two 10-yard touchdown passes to wide receiver Frankie Madero on Friday, but they were not enough in a 35-14 loss to Los Osos.

Bernards finished with a 14-of-31, 175-yard game against the Cubs in Rancho Cucamonga.

West Ranch opens its Foothill League season on Friday at Valencia against Golden Valley.

Bernards also ran the ball seven times for 35 yards.

Wildcats running back Ross Bacon was out with a shoulder injury. However, West Ranch head coach Mike Kane said he will be fine to play against Golden Valley.

"We didn't play well in the first half," Kane said. "Our defense played great in the second half."

The Wildcats (1-4) played a reasonably tough nonleague schedule. Notre Dame, who on Sept. 19 beat West Ranch 52-28, was ranked No. 8 in the Los Angeles Times high school football poll going into this week.

Los Osos (3-2) was ranked No. 12.

"That remains to be seen," Kane said. "But hopefully we'll do better in league."

Halfback Trent Yofkovich, the team's starting safety, started in place of Bacon. He carried the ball 12 times for 24 yards. Fullback Spencer Ortega had four carries on 17 yards.
