Kelly Ann Carpentier, a business major from Castaic, was named to the spring Dean’s List at Pepperdine University. Students named to the Dean’s List must have earned a grade point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale and be in the top ten percent of their class. She is the daughter of Tom and Tracey Carpentier of Castaic.

Legacy of Hope
The Legacy of Hope Gala hosted by the Santa Clarita Unit of the American Cancer Society will honor community leaders who provide critical support for cancer research, education, and patient-services programs/

This year’s event, Imagine — More Birthdays! will be held Sunday, Aug. 14, at Robinson Ranch Golf Club.

Honorees this year for the Legacy of Hope Award will be Linda and Moe Hafizi, Santa Clarita Valley publishers of  several magazines. They are honored for their Community Awareness Leadership.

Also receiving the Legacy of Hope Award at the Gala will be Vantage Oncology physicians and staff for their leadership in cancer health care. Founded in 2002, this California-based group supplies accessibility to advanced radiation treatment therapies and compassionate care. Drs. Marc Botnick, Nancy Ellerbroek, Linas Kazlauskas, Bernard Lewinsky, Paul Song, and
Robert Zimmerman and their Staff from the San Fernando and Santa Clarita offices will be recognized for their efforts to ensure patients have access to life-saving and life-enhancing services while paving the way to a world with more birthdays.

The 2011 Award of Distinction will go to Judith Harris, M.A., MFT, for her many years of Mission Support. She is a psycho-therapist who utilizes the healing power of humor in her work and on her website, SufferinginStyle.com.

Herself a 15-year cancer survivor, she has frequently been a valuable volunteer and ally to the American Cancer Society—Santa Clarita Valley Unit by speaking on their behalf numerous times. Her chapter, “Becoming Strong at the Broken Places,” was included in Dr. Gregory Senofsky’s book, A Patient’s Guide to Outstanding Breast Cancer Care. Info:  (661) 298-0886.
