Mike Penberthy has trained CIF championship-winning teams each of the last three years. He’s worked with athletes at the college and professional levels.

And now he has a consistent place to train them.

The former Los Angeles Lakers guard and star at The Master’s College has joined forces with Velocity Sports Performance in Valencia to expand his Pro Basketball Academy and Pro Shooting Coach programs and travel ball teams to younger age groups and a greater number of athletes overall.

“Hopefully this will become an area where players really want to get high-level skill development and go from there,” Penberthy said.

Penberthy played parts of two seasons with the Lakers before continuing his professional career in Europe.

He has been holding training camps at The Master’s College, but was ultimately limited by TMC’s schedule.

The move to Velocity allows him to hold more sessions on an NBA-level floor.

“The combination of that with the sports performance at Velocity, which is what my teams will do and kids will be a part of, that combo is something I wish I had as a player that I didn’t get until halfway through college,” he said.

Sessions will be broken down by age group from 3-9 p.m., and could feature NBA players from time to time.

Penberthy said he trains such athletes as DeMar DeRozan (Toronto Raptors), Nick Young (Washington Wizards), Andre Miller (Denver Nuggets), Corey Maggette (Charlotte Bobcats), Landry Fields (New York Knicks) and Rudy Gay (Memphis Grizzlies) in the mornings.

“That’s what they agreed to do early on, but now with the lockout, that’s thrown a wrench into their availability,” Penberthy said. “Coaches that I know, players that I know, will come up and work out there.”
