A search is ongoing for Rusty, a 6-pound Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix, who has been missing following a car crash on Highway 126 near Castaic on Monday.

A 57-year-old Sylmar woman lost her dog in Castaic after a car crash Monday.

Malinda Palovich was driving east on Highway 126 toward Valencia when her blood sugar dropped so low that she blacked out. Palovich lost control of her Jeep SUV, crashing into a large cement pole and flipping the vehicle. No one else was involved in the crash. Palovich had no serious injuries and is set to be released from the hospital today.

She had two dogs with her in the car at the time. Firefighters rescued one from the car. But the second dog was already missing when firefighters reached the scene.

Palovich's daughter Nichole Tafoya and family have been searching everywhere for the 6-pound Chihuahua-Pomeranian mix, Rusty, and are seeking help from anyone who may have seen him.

Rusty's coat is black with brown on his paws and stomach.

Chloe, Palovich's other dog that was also in the accident, is missing her playmate and is "looking everywhere for him," Tafoya said. "You could tell she's sad, they played together all the time."

"We scoured the area," Tafoya said. "We've done fliers, went to the pound, everything."

Tafoya said Rusty is like a child to her mom and she would love to find him. Rusty is very shy and around one year old. The dog has a microchip inside with the family's contact information. Tafoya hopes that someone will turn him into a veterinarian so they can use the chip to reunite Palovich with her dog.

"We are very concerned and would like to find him," said Tafoya. "Also, finding him will help his owner in her recovery."

If anyone has seen Rusty or has any information about him, please call Malinda Palovich at either her cell (805) 727- 0868, or her home (805) 524-3858.
