The Hart district has named Chad Powell and Melanie Hagman as junior high school assistant principals for the 23,000-student school district, officials said Thursday.

Powell has taught in the William S. Hart Union High School District since 2002. Most recently, he served as Associated Student Body director for Rio Norte Junior High School.

Hagman is a counselor at Granada Hills Charter School and has 15 years of middle and high school teaching experience.
The two will fill two open positions following the retirement of Patricia McHorney from La Mesa Junior High School and the acceptance of a position out of state by Sam Yuhan of Rancho Pico Junior High School.

Powell and Hagman will start as assistant principals in July. Their school assignments will be determined in the next few weeks.

The decision comes after the district received 200 applications for the positions from teachers, counselors, assistant principals and principals throughout California, Hart district spokeswoman Gail Pinsker said.
