Letter: Removing God from pledge is un-American

Everything that’s wrong with America was recently on display by NBC. The conscious omission, twice, of the phrase “under God,” from the otherwise patriotic montage of events on the coverage of the U.S. Open last weekend was inexcusable, deliberate, sly and a backhand to the face of every American.

Leaving God out of our lives, traditions and governing has resulted in the mess we’re in today. Nearly everyone I talk to, be they conservative or liberal, agrees with the fact that America is disintegrating — and at a pace few could have imagined. And the one common denominator: God is gone (if liberals and the ACLU had their way).

The foolishness — proven ad infinitum by history — of pushing God out of our culture, legal system, educational institutions, sporting events, government and out of the arts, with predictable results, simply defies logic.

The truth of the old adage, “Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it,” has never been more evident than in 2011 America. Some in society, now to include the management at NBC, seem oblivious to the results of their actions and to the pitfalls inherent in banishing God to Sunday mornings in church and the opening prayers at NASCAR races.

Maybe the network’s having three television shows in the top nine for the week of June 13 emboldens them to poke their finger in the eye of Americans and to create their own brand of selective patriotism.

I can only hope that NBC’s purposeful omission of “under God” from its coverage of the U.S. Open will prove to be a resounding wake-up call to all patriotic Americans and a triple bogey from which the network may not soon recover.
