UPDATED: 5 arrested in trespass case

Sheriff’s deputies found a man suspected of rape during a sweep of the Santa Clara River wash, which was saw five arrested for allegedly trespassing, authorities said Wednesday.

On Tuesday evening, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station found five people in the wash in Newhall, arrested them and charged them with trespassing on lands under cultivation, officials said Wednesday.

The four men and one woman, ranging in age from 24 to 48, were arrested at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the wash near Valle Del Oro, sheriff’s Sgt. Richard Nagler said. The rape suspect is a 29-year-old gardener.

Three of the men and the woman were being held Wednesday at the Sheriff’s Station on $5,000 bail. All of the men had warrants issued against them, Nagler said.

A fourth man arrested in the trespassing sweep was being held without bail.

The Newhall man was charged with rape, according to Detective Rich Simmons of the Special Victims Bureau.

“He was initially arrested, and charged with trespassing and brought into the station,” then charged with rape, Simmons said.
