Castaic Union School District hosted its eighth annual Arts Extravaganza on May 19 and included dozens of displays of artwork from Castaic students.

Castaic Middle School’s Arts Extravaganza was the brainchild of a few teachers who wanted to create a community event where the arts took center stage.

It has evolved into an extremely popular affair for the entire district, which offers opportunities for students, teachers and community members to not only exhibit their artwork, but participate in interactive activities, such as chalk painting and working with a potter’s wheel.

The Arts Extravaganza includes exhibits and performances from all arts disciplines with musical theater excerpts, band performances and a seemingly never-ending gallery of visual art work.

Last year’s gallery even included an original work by Castaic Middle School’s Principal Ellen Edeburn, a national board-certified visual arts teacher.

In addition to gallery walls covered with a multitude of visual arts media, visitors were treated to displays of hand-crafted
musical instruments, photography exhibits, robotics and performances by the middle school choir, in which students re-enacted scenes from their recently sold-out musical production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.”
