A freeway motorist suffered broken bones and other injuries when his car plunged into a ravine near the Valencia Boulevard off-ramp of Interstate 5 Tuesday.

The motorist, whose identity was not released, suffered was injured when his car left the northbound lanes of I-5 and crashed into the ravine about 10 a.m.

The Volvo “flipped over (which) made access to it difficult,” said Inspector Matt Levesque of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

Firefighters had to use hydraulic sheers to pry open the car’s roof, Levesque said, then further pry the dashboard off the pinned motorist.

“The patient was alert but had obviously suffered some traumatic injuries, some fractured bones,” he said.

The position of the car when it landed in the gully made it difficult for rescuers to get to the motorist, he said.

“For some unknown reason, he made an unsafe turn to the right, going off the road and down into that ravine,” said Officer Perry Haggard of the California Highway Patrol. “The collision pretty much accordian-ed his car,” he said.
