Letter: Here’s your SCV mosque, Mr. Kraut

Regarding the June 21 editorial by Jonathan Kraut, “It’s time for a mosque to join the SCV”:

I suggest Mr. Kraut get out in the community and smell the roses. There already is a mosque in the city.

The old post office building in downtown Newhall was sold and converted into a mosque. Although it is “low-key” in appearance and maintenance, it is, in fact, a mosque and regular prayer services are held every Friday, should you care to attend.

It may be hard to tell exactly what the site is, since there is no defining sign. With the homeless, panhandlers and abandoned shopping carts cluttering the alleys and side streets, it gets lost in the neighborhood beautification of Old Town Newhall, and could possibly be mistaken for a homeless shelter.

Hey, maybe that’s a new mosque being erected at the end of Main Street. Or if that is a library, as we are led to believe, it will be the largest monstrosity in Old Town.

Have any of you driven down Main Street and seen this “sky rise” of steel being erected? It does not fit the Old Town low-profile image and is deserving a photo story follow-up by The Signal.

I think we were sold another bill of goods on this huge, soon-to-be-outdated “library.”

Remember the back-in parking idea in downtown Newhall? Library, no — mosque, maybe.

Way to go, once again, Old Town Newhall and City Council.

Okay, Mr. Julian Williamson, you asked for letters and complaints to fill your page. Will you print this one?

Editor’s note: Yes.
