Letter: C’mon, SCV, let me know your opinions

Howdy hey, Santa Clarita Valley. It’s me, Julian Williamson, Signal opinion editor (the name at the top right of the Opinion page).

I’m writing to you directly because we’ve had a serious and troubling drought for the last few weeks — in the letters department.

I love reading all your submissions, putting them on the page, posting them online and then watching the banter unfold on the-signal.com.

But I can’t print what I don’t have.

Perhaps it’s because many of you would rather take your thoughts to the online message board than sit down and type out a few hundred words for your community paper, but the Opinion section is fueled by, well, opinions. Yours, mostly.

I want to hear about your thoughts on the City Council, business dealings, state and federal political actions, budget happenings, local nonprofits, the mail service, rebuttals to other letters, traffic issues, pollution, reactions to Signal articles, gas prices, thank yous for good deeds done — essentially stuff that matters to the SCV.

All I ask is that you adhere to Signal guidelines:

Along with your submission, include your name, address and phone number so either our amazing intern or I can give you a call and verify authorship to make sure no one is using your name for evil-doing.

Along with this, we can’t print any anonymous letters, and, yes, that includes pseudonyms and nicknames. To be printed, it has to include your name with the city in which you reside.

I’m also asking that writers keep it above the belt when writing about someone, and keep it factually accurate. Include official sources to support any claims made, and attribution for material cited.

In other words: Don’t be mean; don’t be wrong; don’t lie; and don’t steal without giving credit. (The same applies to online comments.)

And then just try to keep it less than 300 words, and send it off to letters@the-signal.com, fax it to (661) 255-9689 or snail-mail it to me at Letters to the Editor, The Signal, 24000 Creekside Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91355.

Bear in mind that the page is only so big, so I might not be able to print all letters immediately. But I will do my best to get them through the works as fast as I can and keep them timely.

This is your paper, SCV. Be a part of it.
